The Lion Capital of Ashoka (c. 250 BCE) originally sat on a pillar in the Isipatana. It was adopted as the official emblem of India in 1950.

Isipatana is one of four places of pilgrimage for devout Buddhists. This is where Gautama Buddha did his first teaching after being enlightened. A community of monks was established here, recorded as far back as 2000 BCE.

Dhamekh Stupa |
The Dhamekh Stupa, built in 500 CE on a base from 249 BCE, to mark the spot of the deer park where Buddha gave his first teaching.

Mulagandhakuti Vihara was built in 1931 to house Buddhist relics found in Taxila.
