The Hussainabad Imambara was built in 1838 as a congregation hall for Shia Muslims, and mausoleum for its builder, Muhammed Ali Shah, the third Nawab of Awadh.

The British Residency was built 1780-1800 for the British Resident General. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the Siege of Lucknow resulted in the British abandoning the Residency.
